Do you believe people must be selfish to survive? This is the central question of this essay. Survival does not require people to behave selfishly because the key to survival is having purpose in a crisis; caring for others gives people purpose, and people who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish. Most survival stories prove that the key to survival is to have purpose in a crisis and to set your mind on something so you can get to safety.
If people do not keep a cool head, they often end up dead. Helping other people keeps people calm in a crisis Gonzales Writes Gonzales Writes. “That lesson was driven home again and again: Helping someone else is the best way to ensure your own survival” (Gonzales 331). This proves that survival is not selfish because by helping someone else there is a better chance to ensure your own survival. Another example that supports this is the air force survival checklist. The number one item is Positive Mental Attitude. “Cool is the ultimate American conception of the survival model” (Gonzales 332). People who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish. The key to survival is having purpose in a crisis; caring for others gives people purpose.
Being in control and helping others gives people a purpose in a crisis; Helping others requires making things happen. The survivor plans by setting small, manageable goals and then systematically achieving them” (Gonzales 332). This quote explains that survival is not selfish because setting goals helps you to get others to safety. Gonzales also explains that helping others becomes a mission for many survivors. “They have come to understand, perhaps unconsciously, that they can only live fully by helping others through that same transformation” (Gonzales 334). Survival is a transformation that makes people selfless, not selfish. Although survival is clearly not selfish, others disagree.
Some people argue that People shouldn’t assume they are capable of saving others; it could cost them their lives. This is wrong because doctors and nurses have a better odd of survival than others. So, it's obvious that survival is not selfish.
Because people who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish and the key to survival is having purpose in a crisis; Survival is not selfish. People need to stay calm and the best way to do so is to focus on others. This also provides purpose. So, is survival selfish? Obviously not.
